Unfair Jobs Fair

Our campaign – the Unfair Jobs Fair – sheds light on the hidden, insidious nature of modern slavery in the UK and the awful treatment victims endure at the hands of perpetrators. We mimicked the tricks used by exploiters in order to show how easy it is for someone to get trapped.

But what is modern slavery exactly?

Modern slavery is when someone loses their freedom and is controlled and exploited by another person or people for personal or commercial gain. It is an umbrella term for many forms of slavery including but not exclusive to human trafficking.

Because of the hidden nature of modern slavery, most people don't know it’s happening and don't know how to spot it.

It can manifest in many forms including, but not limited to:

  • Forced labour: People affected are compelled to work in poor conditions for little or no pay, often under threats of violence. This is prevalent in industries such as agriculture, construction and manufacturing.
  • Criminal exploitation: Trafficking individuals into illegal activities such as drug related crimes, such as 'county lines' operations where children are coerced into selling drugs.
  • Sexual exploitation: Forced sex work and the abuse of children for the production of child abuse materials.
  • Domestic servitude: Forcing individuals to work in private households, performing domestic chores and childcare duties under restrictive conditions.

Modern slavery is happening right here in the UK

We often think that modern slavery happens far from home, in sweatshops in distant places. But you might be surprised to know that a quarter of people affected in the UK are British, the biggest nationality identified as potential victims. It appears in many industries, too.

Modern slavery is widespread issue, and 122,000 people are estimated to be trapped in it in the UK, according to estimate by the Global Slavery Index. It’s also getting worse, growing by 33% each year.

Once you’re caught in modern slavery, it’s difficult to escape. For every one person who is successfully rescued, at least seven more are believed to remain enslaved.

Migrant Help is committed to helping survivors gain control over their lives again

Our approach focuses on each person's individual needs. We develop a support plan which provides all-round care with the aim of assisting survivors as they recover from the trauma they endured. Ultimately, our main priorities are reducing the risk of re-trafficking and empowering our clients to gain in confidence in order to move forward to a new and positive chapter in their lives.

If you suspect someone is trapped in modern slavery and in need of help, call the confidential 24/7 modern slavery and exploitation helpline on 08000 121 700. Always call 999 if there is immediate danger.

Being part of the Windrush generation

22 June is Windrush Day, observed each year to commemorate the arrival of HMT Empire Windrush in 1948 and to honour the lasting contributions Caribbean communities have made to life in Britain. We hear from Fenella Jeffers, wife of our Chair of the Board of Trustees, Sir Hugh Bayley, as she reflects on her journey from Nevis to England as part of the Windrush generation, and shares her perspective on identity, migration, race and what it means to belong in Britain.
