Why do I need a Will? Expand Everyone should have an up to date Will. Having something in place helps your loved ones understand your wishes and ensures that those causes important to you benefit from your support, providing much needed funds to continue their work. Writing a Will is very straightforward and doesn’t need to be expensive.
If I leave a Will to Migrant Help, how will it be spent? Expand Leaving a gift in your Will, is leaving a lasting legacy. This gift will make all the difference to those we support. Any gift, large or small, makes it possible for us to provide the support and expertise to someone who finds themselves displaced in a new country, as they rebuild their life. As part of our commitment to you, we will ensure any gift received is used to help those in most need.
Are there different types of Wills? Expand Most legacy gifts are for general purpose which allows your chosen cause to use the funds where they are most needed. You can specify an amount of money, known as a Pecuniary Bequest, or a share of what is left over after all your wishes have been carried out, known as a Residuary Bequest. If you die without a signed Will in place, you die intestate – this situation can cause added stress to your loved ones, as well as having financial cost implications.
Can I support more than one charity? Expand When making a Will, you can support as many charities as you want to. It can be any denomination from smaller gifts of a few hundred pounds, a percentage of your estate or leaving your entire estate to one charity. Making your wishes clear in your Will will help your loved ones.
When do I tell you I’m leaving you a gift in my Will? Expand You don’t need to inform us of your decision, and we also respect that circumstances change. However, should you wish to let us know it gives us an opportunity to thank you and keep you updated on our charitable work. When the time comes for leaving a Will, your legacy will go on to support those who struggle to find support elsewhere.
Seeking appropriate legal advice Expand We strongly recommend you seek the appropriate legal advice when planning a legacy gift. Leaving a gift has Inheritance Tax advantages and a professional advisor will be able to give you the most appropriate advice. We are unable to give recommendations for legal representation, but you can find professions via the Law Society.
Our commitment to you Expand Should you decide to support the work of Migrant Help in your Will, or in memory of a loved one, we will make the following commitment to you: We understand friends and family come first so we will never put pressure on you to leave a gift or tell us your plans. We will respect your privacy at all times. Anything you share with us will be treated in confidence. We commit to use your gift wisely ensuring it reaches those most in need. We are always here to help.
