Migrant Help UK welcomes full refugee status for resettled Syrians

posted : 27th March 2017

The Home Office announced that from 1 July this year, all Syrians arriving under the Vulnerable Persons Relocation Scheme (VPRS) will be granted refugee status rather than humanitarian protection. This means that the refugees will have full access to higher education and overseas travel documents.

Since the beginning of VPRS around 5,500 Syrian refugees have been resettled in the UK out of the planned 20,000 to be resettled by 2020.

Those who have arrived through the programme previously will be able to apply for refugee status for free.

Migrant Help UK currently supports Syrian refugees arriving under this scheme in Kent and Essex. We welcome this move by the Government as it will give the resettled refugees the same opportunity to fulfil their dreams and successfully rebuild their lives as refugees from other parts of the world.
