Impartial advice to foreign nationals being held in UK prisons
Everyone has the right to the advice they need to make informed choices about their life. We make sure that foreign nationals who are serving custodial sentences get the information and guidance they need.
Over the last ten years, the number of foreign national prisoners has nearly doubled, representing over 14 % of the prison population in England and Wales. They come from approximately 168 countries and speak a vast range of languages.
We feel that it is vital that the prison authorities are aware of the distinct needs of foreign national prisoners; that cultural difference and language needs are recognised and appropriate information and advice is given so that a foreign national prisoner fully understands their situation.
How we help
Our Foreign National Prisoner Advice Service ensures that foreign national prisoners receive appropriate advice and information during and at the end of their sentences.
All our advisers’ have an enhanced CRB check and enhanced security clearance to work in the National Offender Management Service. We are accredited by the Office of the Immigration Services Commissioner (OISC) and advisers are approved to provide Level 1 advice and assistance in Asylum, Protection and Immigration.
- Our team of specialist advisers deliver multi-lingual advice and support on areas such as:
- Locating property
- Understanding procedures
- Translation of documents
- Facilitated or voluntary return
- Identification of victims of trafficking
We do find that the FNP service is excellent and is most beneficial to the offenders who have immigration issues. Your staff and ours have worked well together in establishing trust amongst the FNP population, which goes a long way to reducing stress, anxiety and contributes towards reducing the self-harm, that they can sadly experience.
